MIZRACH. 2006-2008

A MIZRACH (meaning “East” in Hebrew) is a paper work hanged on the east walls of every synagogue in Israel and abroad. It has a deep meaning in Jewish thinking, symbolizing the orientation towards Jerusalem, to be faced during prayer, as well as the origin of light and the source of life. In Hebrew, the four letters of MIZRACH are an acronym for “from this side a breath of life”. The MIZRACH encompasses also a longing for Jerusalem, both as a tangible city and as a transcendent idea.

In my work I try to capture the view from my studio and home in Har Gilo and  to respond to.this ambivalent situation of a city that is in the same time vulnerable and aggressive.

מזר”ח, 2006-2008

תיבת “מזרח” היא עבודת נייר התלויה על הקיר בבית הכנסת בארץ ובעולם. היא אוצרת בתוכה משמעויות רבות- היא מסמנת את כוון התפילה לירושלים  ובאותו הזמן מסמלת את מקום זריחת האור ואת מקור החיים: “מצד זה רוח חיים”. מקום פיזי ורוחני זה מקפל בתוכו כמיהה לחיבור עם ירושלים הן כעיר ממשית והן כרעיון נשגב.

מביתי ומחלון הסטודיו בהר גילה אני מנסה להכיל את האמביבלנטיות של העיר- פגיעה, פגועה ופוגעת.
